As announced yesterday by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, Senior District Judge Larry J. McKinney passed away unexpectedly this week. A detailed statement has been released by the Court regarding this tremendous loss.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – September 21, 2017: It is with deep sadness and profound shock that the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana announces that Senior District Judge Larry J. McKinney passed away overnight. The Court will release further information at a later time.
The Court requests that people respect the family’s privacy at this very difficult time, while keeping Judge McKinney’s wife, children, and grandchildren in their thoughts and prayers.

In an effort to ease the ongoing Judicial Emergency in the Southern District of Indiana, beginning on or after October 1, 2017, two Magistrate Judges from the Eastern District of Wisconsin will provide targeted assistance in the Indianapolis division. In addition, Chief Judge Michael J. Reagan of the Southern District of Illinois will be assisting the court by presiding over a trial. See the Press Release for further details.

The Judicial Conference Advisory Committees on Appellate, Bankruptcy, Criminal and Evidence Rules have proposed amendments to the rules and forms.  The public comment period closes on February 15, 2018. On Friday, October 6, 2017, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana and the Indiana State Bar Association Latino Affairs Committee will sponsor a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. The United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana will host the event at 2:00 pm in the Sarah Evans Barker Courtroom (courtroom 216) at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse, 46 East Ohio Street, Indianapolis, Indiana.
 
United States District Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel will be the featured speaker and reflect on his remarkable journey from his childhood in northwest Indiana to his current position as a judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Judge Curiel will talk about his parents, the great opportunities afforded to his family in America, the importance of diversity in our country, and the role of the law in protecting our rights.
