Chief Judge Jane E. Magnus-Stinson has announced that attorney Roger Sharpe will be the next Clerk of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, effective May 10, 2020. Please see the Press Release for full details.

This month, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the federal courthouse in Terre Haute. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, a portrait of Judge Larry J. McKinney is on display in the Terre Haute courtroom through the end of the year. As Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana from 2001 to 2007, Judge McKinney was instrumental in the effort to find a new home for the district court when its former location was acquired by Indiana State University. Chief Judge Diane P. Wood announced that the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit will have a Memorial Proceeding for Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at 9:30 a.m., in the James B. Parsons Ceremonial Courtroom on the 25th Floor of the Dirksen Federal Building at 219 South Dearborn Street, Chicago, Illinois 60604.  Please see Press Release for more information.

The Court has considered the recommendation of the Local Rules Advisory Committee that the revision of certain Local Rules of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana be adopted, and the Clerk issued a Public Notice on September 16, 2019, regarding the proposed amendments.  The Court has considered the proposed amendments and the comments received.

Therefore, pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 2071 and Rule 83 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and Rule 57 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana hereby gives public notice that the amendments (linked below) to the Local Rules of this Court are adopted, effective December 1, 2019.

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana will sponsor a training session for attorneys on trial preparation and practice in prisoner civil rights cases on Friday, November 15, 2019 from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. The training will take place in the court's Jury Assembly Room (Room 172), located on the first floor of the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse, 46 E. The Court Historical Society of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana will host its 12th Annual Court History & Continuing Legal Education Symposium on November 1, 2019, from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM. This year's symposium will feature a look back on two major projects recently completed by the Historical Society, plus an exploration of the paths to the bench of past and present judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. The United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana has determined there is an immediate need to delete Local Criminal Rule 6-1 – Petitions Under 28 U.S.C. Section 2254 or 2255 in Cases Involving a Sentence of Capital Punishment and adopt Local Criminal Rule 38-2 - Cases Challenging the Conviction and/or Sentence Where a Sentence of Death Has Been Imposed.  For details, please see the Public Notice linked below.

Join the U.S. District Court and the Indiana State Bar Association at the Indianapolis Federal Courthouse on Friday, October 11, at 2:00 pm to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. We will welcome Ms. Sylvia Mendez, who, as a nine-year-old girl, participated in a landmark legal battle to desegregate California public schools. The case, Mendez v. Westminster, preceded Brown v. Board of Education by seven years and laid the groundwork for national desegregation in education. Ms. Mendez is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and will speak about her lifelong efforts to fight for educational equality. She will be joined by Judge Jose Salinas of the Marion Superior Court, who will examine the legal aspects of the Mendez case. The event is free but registration is required.
