Chief U.S. District Judge Jane E. Magnus-Stinson and U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler warn the public of a nationwide scam in which the callers pose as U.S. Marshals or other government officials and claim that the victim is about to be arrested for not appearing for jury duty, but can avoid arrest by paying a fine.

Magistrate Judge Tim A. Baker was today awarded the Dr. Morton Finney Jr. Award for Excellence in Legal Education from the Indianapolis Bar Association in recognition of his long-standing dedication to legal education. Chief Judge Jane E. Magnus-Stinson expressed the court's pride in Judge Baker, who has served with distinction since being appointed a magistrate judge in 2001. Chief Justice John G. Roberts recently nominated Judge Baker to the Board of Directors of the Federal Judicial Center, another mark of Judge Baker's high standing in the legal community.

The Local Rules Advisory Committee for the Southern District of Indiana has recommended, and the District Court has authorized release for a period of public comment through December 16, 2017, the revision of certain Local Rules of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.  Please see the attached Notice for details.

The Judicial Emergency in the Southern District of Indiana, exacerbated by the recent deaths of Senior District Judge Larry J. McKinney and Magistrate Judge Denise K. LaRue, is ongoing. In a continued effort to ease the Judicial Emergency, Chief Judge James E. Shadid, of the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois, and District Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer, of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, with the consent of Chief Judge Ruben Castillo, will assist with the caseload of the Southern District of Indiana, sitting by designation. The Honorable Diane P. Wood, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, designated Chief Judge Shadid and Judge Pallmeyer on October 5, 2017 and October 12, 2017, respectively.

The Tenth Annual Court History and Continuing Legal Education Symposium, entitled "The Art of Legal History: From Film to Stone and Every Medium in Between," will be presented on Friday, November 17, 2017, at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Court House, 46 East Ohio Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. The program will be held in the William E. Steckler Ceremonial Courtroom (Courtroom 202). Organized by the Historical Society of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, and sponsored by the Court, this two-hour Continuing Legal Education event will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

The Seventh Circuit Pilot Program on Electronic Discovery is sponsoring a complimentary CLE webinar on November 2, 2017, from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. CT, regarding amendments to FRCP 37(e).  Those interested should click on the "Registration" link below for more information and to register. (Registration is open to the first 1250 registrants.)

The December 2015 amendments to FRCP 37(e) were designed to bring consistency to when courts find the loss of ESI sanctionable.  Has the amendment’s intent to address the “serious problems resulting from the continued exponential growth in the volume of ESI” borne out?  Join distinguished panelists for a discussion of recent cases and recommended practices.

About the Seventh Circuit Pilot Program:
 
The Seventh Circuit Pilot Program on Electronic Discovery was formed to develop, implement, evaluate, and improve pretrial litigation procedures that would provide fairness and justice to all parties while seeking to reduce the cost and burden of electronic discovery consistent with Rule 1 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. The Pilot Program has provided extensive education to thousands of attorneys in the Seventh Circuit and beyond. This CLE session is sponsored by the Pilot Program.
 
The CLE has been approved for one hour of CLE credit in Illinois, and credit in Indiana is pending.  Only the first 1250 registrants can be accommodated.

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana will celebrate the life and career of the late Senior Judge Larry J. McKinney at a memorial ceremony to be held on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at 2:00 pm.
 
Those wishing to pay tribute to Judge McKinney are invited to view a live video feed of the ceremony at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse, 46 East Ohio Street, Indianapolis, in the Sarah Evans Barker Courtroom (#216). No RSVP is required to view the live feed. Judge McKinney passed away unexpectedly on September 20, 2017.
 
Additionally, people wishing to share remembrances of Judge McKinney may send such notes to remembrances@insd.uscourts.gov. Remembrances will be posted to the Court’s website.
