It is with deep sadness that the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana announces the death of Magistrate Judge Denise K. LaRue on August 2, 2017. Judge LaRue was appointed to the court on May 11, 2011, and filled a new magistrate judgeship that had been created for the Southern District of Indiana by the Judicial Conference of the United States.  For complete details, please see the Press Release.

The Historical Society of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana is excited to announce the world premiere of And Justice For All: Indiana's Federal Courts, a new documentary film. This film was commissioned by the Historical Society in celebration of the bicentennial of Indiana's federal courts.

As the Press Release details, the premiere event will take place at the Indiana War Memorial on Wednesday, June 14, at 4:00 PM.  A brief reception will follow the premiere. If you'd like to attend, please register here. One hour of CLE credit is pending approval.

If you are unable to join us, please note that the broadcast premiere of the film will occur on June 15, at 9:00 PM on WFYI- Channel 20.

United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. recently nominated Tim A. Baker, Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, to the Board of Directors of the Federal Judicial Center (FJC). The nomination was approved by a vote of the Judicial Conference of the United States. Judge Baker is the sole magistrate judge to sit on this esteemed Board. The Local Rules Advisory Committee for the Southern District of Indiana has recommended, and the District Court has authorized release for a period of public comment through May 17, 2017, the revision of certain Local Rules of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.  The proposed rule amendments are attached below.

Beginning March 1, 2017, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana will have two additional judicial officers providing limited assistance by taking a discrete number of civil cases from the Indianapolis docket. The United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit has entered a designation that allows Chief Judge William C. Griesbach and Judge Lynn S. Adelman, District Judges in the Eastern District of Wisconsin, to perform the duties of District Judges in the Southern District of Indiana. The United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, along with the Bankruptcy Court, U.S. Attorney's Office, Probation Office, Marshals Service, and Indiana Federal Community Defenders, Inc., has announced that its annual Black History Month event is set for Friday, February 24, 2017. This year's speaker is Ms. A'Lelia Bundles, Madam C.J. Walker's great-great granddaughter and biographer. Madam Walker, born 150 years ago this December, is an Indianapolis legend, renowned for her entrepreneurial skills (she was one of the first female self-made millionaires) and philanthropy. Ms. Bundles will discuss Madam Walker and her attorney, Freeman B. Ransom, in a presentation titled, "An Amazing Partnership of Business and Law: Madam C. J. Walker and Attorney F. B. Ransom."

The event will take place at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse  (46 East Ohio Street, Indianapolis) on February 24 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm, in the William E. Steckler Ceremonial Courtroom (courtroom 202). One hour of CLE credit is pending approval. Musical entertainment will be provided by the North Central High School Northernaires gospel choir, and refreshments will be provided following the program. Registration is not required.
