The Federal Court Family Celebrates Black History Month with Black Migrations: The Impact on Society and Social Justice in America

In 2011, Marcia M. Anderson made history as she became the first African American woman to achieve the rank of Major General in the United States Army. General Anderson retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in 2016 after 36 years of service; also an attorney, she has spent over 25 years as the clerk of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. Her accomplishments make General Anderson the ideal speaker for the federal court family’s annual Black History Month event.

On Friday, May 3, 2019, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana will host General Anderson as she presents “Black Migrations: The Impact on Society and Social Justice in America.” This free event will begin at 2:00 pm in the William E. Steckler Ceremonial Courtroom (courtroom 202) at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse, 46 East Ohio Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. General Anderson’s remarks will focus on the many migrations of African Americans during the twentieth century, such as movements from southern states to northern states and how that changed urban populations, the workplace, electoral politics, education, and influenced the civil rights movement.

In addition to her military service and work at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, General Anderson is a graduate of the Rutgers University School of Law, the U. S. Army War College, and Creighton University.  Her awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit and Meritorious Service Medals, as well as the Parachutists Badge. She is currently a member of Board of Directors of the Green Bay Packers, the only publicly owned franchise in the National Football League.

Musical entertainment will be provided by recording artist Sharon “Bunnie” Moore of Indianapolis. Her first CD recording, “Glory To Your Name,” was nominated for the Rhythm of Gospel Independent Artist Awards in 4 categories.  Sharon was nominated in 3 categories at the Kingdom Image Awards in 2017 and 2018: Best Female Artist, Female Artist of the Year, and Artist of the Year.

This program will last one hour, and one hour of Continuing Legal Education credit has been approved. Pre-registration is NOT required.

The program is free and open to the public. Photography will be permitted during the program. If you would like to send a photographer and/or reporter to cover the program, or if you have other questions, please contact Doria Lynch at 317-229-3729 or Doria_Lynch@insd.uscourts.gov.
