Tim A. Baker was appointed U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Indiana in 2001. Judge Baker presently serves as a member of the Federal Judicial Center Board, having been nominated to this position in 2017 by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. The FJC oversees the education and research for all federal judges. As a member of the FJC board, Judge Baker also serves on the Magistrate Judge Education Committee, which is responsible for educating new and experienced magistrate judges nationwide. In 2008, Chief Justice Roberts appointed Judge Baker to a three-year term on this committee, and in 2011 appointed him to a successive term as committee chair.
Judge Baker has held numerous bar leadership positions. He currently serves on the Indiana State Bar Association Board of Governors, is Chair-Elect of the ISBA House of Delegates, and previously served as chair of the ISBA’s Federal Judicial Committee. Judge Baker is a Life Fellow of the Indiana Bar Foundation. Judge Baker’s leadership positions with the Indianapolis Bar Association include serving on the IBA Board of Managers, serving as the IBA’s first Professionalism Coordinator, chairing the IBA’s Labor and Employment Law Section, and serving as a founding co-chair of the Law Student Division. Judge Baker is a Distinguished Fellow of the Indianapolis Bar Foundation, and a two-time winner of the IBA’s Dr. John Morton Finney, Jr. Award for Excellence in Legal Education.
Prior to being appointed to the bench, Judge Baker served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, and was in private practice with Barnes & Thornburg in Indianapolis. Judge Baker began his legal career by serving as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Larry J. McKinney.
Judge Baker graduated with distinction from Valparaiso University School of Law, where he served on the law review, and from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, where he wrote for the Indiana Daily Student newspaper. Before attending law school, he was a newspaper reporter in central Indiana.
