What is a Written Opinion?

The E-Government Act (Pub. L. No. 107-347) sets forth requirements for providing public access to government information over the Internet, including, but not limited to, written opinions issued by the court.  Written opinions have been defined by the Judicial Conference as “any document issued by a judge or judges of the court sitting in that capacity, that sets forth a reasoned explanation for a court’s decision.”  The authoring Judge determines which documents meet this definition.

If a court opinion is cited in a filing document, please refer to Local Rule 7-1(d).  If a specific court opinion does not appear in a search, please contact the Clerk’s Office for assistance.
