William G. Hussmann, Jr., was born in Evansville, Indiana, attended Harrison High School, and graduated from Valparaiso University (B.A. 1972; J.D. 1975). He began his legal career in private practice in a small firm in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he practiced in the areas of criminal defense and plaintiff’s personal injury. In 1981, he became a Deputy Attorney General with the Office of the Indiana Attorney General, defending civil litigation against the State in the Tort Claims Section of that office. In 1983, he became a Staff Attorney with the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission, where he prosecuted claims of attorney ethical violations before hearing officers and the Indiana Supreme Court. In 1986, he became a Staff Attorney for Associated Insurance companies, where he supervised and conducted the defense of litigation against health care insurers, most commonly known as Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans. He became a United States Magistrate Judge on April 4, 1988. In that position, he spends over 90% of his time handling civil litigation in the Evansville, Terre Haute, and New Albany Divisions of the Southern District of Indiana. In an average year, he will participate in approximately 200 settlement conferences where parties with settlement authority are present in person, and he may conduct bench and jury trials.
