Congratulations!  You have been selected for Grand Jury Service.  Your package includes a Summons for Grand Jury Service, an information brochure, directions to the courthouse with parking suggestions, and a postage-paid envelope.  The summons and brochure both indicate the date, time and location you are required to appear. Simply complete both sides of the Summons for Grand Jury Service questionnaire and return it in the enclosed, postage-paid envelope within ten (10) days.

The Grand Jury has a special function in the court and consists of 16-23 members.  The Grand Jury hears evidence presented by a United States Attorney and concern federal criminal cases.  Based upon this evidence, the Grand Jury determines if a crime has been committed and if so, will issue an indictment.  Grand Jury proceedings are not open to the public.  A Grand Jury will only meet a few times per month during the term of service.

There are two types of Grand Jury panels:

  • A Regular Grand Jury term is six (6) months.  If you are selected to serve on the Regular Grand Jury, you will be provided a schedule for the entire six month period.  A Regular Grand Jury will meet for a maximum of two days per week for two weeks out of the month.  This is a total of 4 days per month.

  • A Special Grand Jury term is eighteen (18) months.  If you are selected to serve on the Special Grand Jury, you will be provided a schedule for the entire eighteen month period.  A Special Grand Jury will meet for a maximum of two days per month.

The length of your term of service is indicated in the accompanying information brochure.
